The Regime
Ok, let’s talk training.
This is a four-year apprenticeship scheme that combines college study with practical, hands-on training.
The college part will see you studying for an ONC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. You’ll learn all about Ohm’s Law – the foundation stone of electronics and electricity – and much more. This’ll give you the knowledge you need to work with electronic and electrical circuits.
The practical part will see you maintaining our fleet of trains. Although you’ll start by observing our engineers at work, we’ll gradually build your responsibilities as your knowledge increases. Because our trains have all kinds of systems – electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, GPS, and so on – you won’t just learn about one area, but many. You’ll need to keep a logbook at every stage to show that you understand every task.
The scheme itself breaks down as follows:
- Year 1
- One week induction to the company, followed by a year at a college, studying for your PEO (Performing Engineering Operations) competencies at Level 2 and your National Certificate (ONC) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
- Year 2
- The hands-on training begins. 80% of your time will be spent at our Brighton, Selhurst and Battersea Stewarts Lane depots, learning from our engineers. The other 20% will be spent at a local college, completing your studies.
- Year 3
- Full-time, on-the-job training.
- Year 4
- Full-time, on-the-job training, with the option to turn your ONC into an HNC qualification.
Every step of the way, you’ll have the support and guidance of experienced professionals to help you. We’ll also monitor your progress at regular intervals to ensure you’re getting the most out of the scheme.
